MICHAEL STEVEN DAVIS a/k/a
MICHAEL JAMES KING
Steve was born in Indianapolis and was raised first by his own family until his grandmother died and then by Catholic Charities and foster parents. He had an early love for racing and autos, probably from being raised in Indianapolis. He was not able to enjoy these things, though, until he became an adult. His younger years meant sharing toys with other kids.
Steve ran away at 14 and went to Alabama. He was able to avoid the authorities and lied about his age and changed his name so he could get a job. Also he got married at 15 (no one else knew how old he really was). At the time of his marriage he had a job at an automotive sales company in the body shop and only a shoe box of belongings along with an extra set of clothes plus the uniforms he had with his job. Since then, he has collected things (all kinds of things, especially anything that relates to automobiles.)
Steve, over the years, worked many different low-paying jobs at grocery stores and automotive shops. He even spent three years in the U. S. Army.
At one automotive shop in the 50’s he worked on a neat little 39 Ford truck and fell in love with it. He said that he would buy it one day.
Yes, years later he found it and towed it to California where he was then living. On the way back to California he had an accident and ran off the road, but the truck was without injury and that was what he cared about. He and his wife and four kids now lived in California in rental property. A friend offered to allow Steve to park the little truck at his house. It stayed there so long that a tree grew through it.
Over the years, he and his family prospered. He worked as a truck mechanic at Foster Farms and at Gallo Wine in California, and in his spare time learned about fiberglass from his friend Bruce Ruge who had his own shop. He worked on customized Corvettes, fiberglass hot rods, sprints & midgets.
Finally, someone connected with Walt Disney at Tujunga, California learned about Steve and he accepted a job there in the Imagineering Department. There he worked on many special projects for Tokyo Disney, EuroDisney, etc. If you have seen the 50’s style cars at Sci Fi dinner at MGM Studios in Florida, you will find a car that Steve’s initials and birthday as the license tag.He died in 2011 and his family hopes he can still live on through his many projects and his little truck when someone else finally finishes it.
